The first mechanically printed book is generally accepted to be the Gutenberg Bible, printed in Mainz, Germany in 1455 by Johann Henne zum Gensfleisch zur Laden.  It marked the start of the “Gutenberg Revolution” and the age of printed books in the West.

Fonts were originally created by hand and often named after the printer who created them.  French printer Claude Garamond’s font is still in use today along with Giambattista Bodoni, 1798.

In process color printing, K is the abbreviation for black ink.  The K stands for Key printer, the printing plate that carries the text copy or Keyline information.

Letters that are not capitalized are called “lower case” because in early printing days those letters were kept in the lower drawer of the case.
